The big event this week is the eHealth Week 2011 and World of Health IT conference held in Budapest, Hungary. EU countries present were told "We have to invest in eHealth today. At a time when individuals and government need to watch every euro, eHealth can help to improve the efficiency of healthcare systems, boost the economy and empower patients."

The big event last week was the American Telemedicine Association's ATA annual meeting in Tampa, Florida, from 1 to 3 May 2011. Telemedicine has been a front runner in the application of videoconferencing in North America and is now benefiting from 1080P HD images and HD video.

There are 7 Telemedicine User stories: Denmark puts patients first with Telemedicine;  video conferencing at the Odense University Hospital in Denmark will extend throughout the southern by end 2011; Six key hole surgery operations were watched in 1080P HD video by 70 surgeons at a Hospital in Middlesbrough, UK (VideoCentric); Telemedicine``s value in monitoring care in intensive care units was showcased at ATA 2011; The University of Arizona Telemedicine program aims to diagnose cervical cancer at a remote location (ATA 2011); The Ontario Telemedicine Network has set up VC at 300 sites in remote, rugged Northern Ontario; Dean Clinic based in Madison Wis., a large integrated healthcare delivery systems has implemented visual communications ( Video Guidance); In India, a Chennai-based eye care institute operates  vans fitted with advanced medical equipment that tour rural areas; 3G mobile phones will be used soon for rural medicine.

New equipment news is: Polycom adds 3 new Telepresence offerings: the EagleEye Director room camera tracking system, the HDX 4500 executive desktop TP system, and the mobile Telepresence m100 software solution; American Well's  Online Care Suite will soon include VidyoTechnology™; CeeLab is to sell throughout Europe the Compunetix HD Video MCUs to compliment Ceelab HD VC endpoints based on Sony technology.

Industry News is: Microsoft will acquire Skype; UPMC, a $9 billion global health enterprise, and Alcatel-Lucent team to develop next-generation Telemedicine solution for 2013.
